What the evidence labels mean

Each compound carries one of five labels describing its published research record. The full criteria — and what each label explicitly does not mean — are set out in the evidence ratings methodology.

CLINICAL

Multiple adequately powered randomised controlled trials in humans, with published results.

EARLY CLINICAL

Human trials exist but are small, early phase, single-site, or limited to surrogate endpoints.

PRECLINICAL

Evidence is confined to animal models, tissue, or cell-culture work. No meaningful human data.

LIMITED

Only a small number of studies exist, or the available studies have serious methodological limits.

INSUFFICIENT

There is not enough published, independently verifiable research to characterise the compound.
